Relief is here! Yesterday I felt minor head congestion brewing along with an ever so slight scratch in my throat. As I have done for years, I made up a batch of what my family calls, “garlic lemonade.” It is high in anti-bacterial foods and has hydration benefits. I’ve adapted it many times based on new needs, insights, or what I have on hand. Here is how I made it yesterday.
Garlic Lemonade
4 cloves of garlic, pressed into a quart mason jar
4 tablespoons minced ginger, fresh or frozen (dried works too)
2 medjool dates, pitted
Boiling water to fill mason jar. Place lid on jar and let steep 30 minutes.
Carefully pour mixture into a Vitamix blender or other high-speed blender and whirl for several minutes.
Pour mixture back into mason jar and add:
4 tablespoons lemon juice, fresh or bottled (Italian Volcano)
1 heaping tablespoon honey (raw is yummy)
2 teaspoons salt
Makes 4 servings. Drink as-is like a tea or feel free to add additional boiling water to dilute. Drink throughout day to bring comfort and relieve from congestion or cold and flu symptoms.
What do you drink when you feel congested or a cold coming on? What are your favorite cold-fighting weapons?
Feel well! ~~~~~~~~ Angie Mc
Gotta love the garlic lemonade! I hope it keeps you up and running ❤

I’ll have to try this, Angie.
For a raw and scratchy throat, which is normally caused by (VERY) acid nasal drip making my throat raw, I use a mix of vinegar, salt and water…the vinegar especially changes the pH of the acid and the scratch goes away almost immediately. This is important because the rawness allows bacteria to take up residence and make me sick…so, while I may eventually get the cold, I won’t get strep or even much of a sore throat.
Hope you are well into a very merry holiday season. Blessings,
Mary

Vinegar! Excellent suggestion, Mary, and I appreciate your explanation, too. I have Bragg’s cider vinegar on hand 🙂
Advent is moving along beautifully and I’m so very excited for this Christmas, our family’s first with my grandson, Henry ❤
Happiest holidays to you & yours!

Enjoy…precious and so fleeting so we need to just sink ourselves into the joy, the glory, and let all other things slide by us. Eyes on the prize!

Mary, do you mean you *gargle* this?

I know that I take a tablespoon of vinegar for other digestive matters, so I read it as taking a shot 😀

I did except for drinking salt! (I *have* choked down Bragg’s in water. That’ll get your attention but quick.)

mmm – well I call my version garlic tea – and glad it helped – 🙂
I alsop have some Braggs (with the “mother”) – but we also buy a big generic bottle of the apple cider vinegar and use it for baths and other things – 🙂

Angie – Just reading the ingredients is enough to make a person get well so they wouldn’t have to drink the mixture.

2015 Good Health to you… Always great to go the natural route. I eat a clove of raw garlic and gargle with warm (not from the tap) salt water. Drink vast amounts of water and tea and stay away from sugar, bread and dairy.

Oh yes great reminder to limit sugar, bread (gluten and grain carbs) and dairy. That’s me every day now 😀

I make this! =) But a caveat, Angie, that if you have heat symptoms like a sore throat, the ginger and garlic might worsen it (lemon is cooling). Just depends on the type of cold that’s coming on. Thanks for the like on my curried potatoes (on my other blog) a few wks ago. Write me again this wk if you’re interested in a guest spot. =)
